My mother-in-law requested to keep our kids for a week during the holidays – but when I went to pick them up, my heart broke

When my mother-in-law, Jean, insisted on hosting my kids for a week during the holiday break, I thought it would be harmless—a chance for them to bond while giving me a breather. But what I discovered changed everything.

I’m Abby, 34, married to Brad for seven years, with two kids: Lucas, 8, and Sophie, 6. Jean, in her late 60s, has always been polite but intense, often overstepping in her efforts to be the “perfect grandmother.” Brad dismissed it as “old-fashioned,” so I brushed off her quirks—until now.

Jean offered to take the kids for a week, claiming she wanted to spoil them. Reluctantly, I agreed and even gave her $1,000 for their expenses. The week dragged on, and when I went to pick them up, excitement turned to dread.

The house was eerily quiet. Jean greeted me with forced cheerfulness and vague excuses. When I finally found Lucas and Sophie in the backyard, they were dirty, exhausted, and clinging to me. They revealed that Jean had made them work all week in her garden, promising fun outings that never happened. Their clothes were torn, and they looked worn out.

When confronted, Jean brushed it off, claiming it was about teaching “responsibility” and “discipline.” Worse, she admitted using the money for her bills instead of the kids’ needs. Furious, I told her this betrayal was unacceptable. My kids deserve to be kids—not laborers for her problems.

I gathered Lucas and Sophie and left, vowing not to return until Jean could respect their childhood. As we drove away, Sophie whispered, “Good.” That one word affirmed my decision: their well-being comes first.
